What are you playing for Easter

    Email from Wil Mandac

I finally subscribed to the handbell podcast (Needs a new name, methinks.  ”Bellcast”?   Maybe you should make up a little naming  contest.).
Upon hearing that you guys haven’t received many emails of any sort, I thought I’d at least “chime” in from Area XII-land. What’s my group (the one I direct) playing for Easter?  We’re
planning to do Barbara Kinyon’s 2-octave arrangement of “Crown Him With Many Crowns” from her “Let’s All Ring – for Easter” collection. We might also ring along as the congregation sings “Christ the Lord is Risen Today.”  I’m also preparing them for the annual Cupertino
Spring Ring that will happen March 25th at Valley Church (Dave Ruder’s church, Area XII chair).  The mass pieces for that are as follows:

    - “Grazioso” by Arnold Sherman
    - “Our God, Our Help in Ages Past” by Lee Afdahl
    - “Within the Darkest Night” by Derek Hakes

The last piece will also be used by the “A” Division at the Area XII Festival in June in Belmont (just south of San Francisco).  Now, in relation to Paul’s tardy ringer dilemma, why not start the
rehearsal a 1/2 hour – 45 minutes later?  6:15 seems early for a rehearsal to me.   I schedule rehearsals to begin at 7pm (going until 8:30ish).  For one, it allows people to eat dinner & to freshen up for the rehearsal, as well as allow them to travel closer to the end of frantic traffic (hopefully).    We used to start at 7:30pm, but I wasn’t a big fan of staying until 9pm.
So, there you have it….one new email from a new listener.  I hope this starts an avalanche of new ones.

      Dedication and being on-time:
It is tricky when you are dealing with adult volunteers.  This year I started with a contract where people can be replaced or put in sub status if they are consistently late or absent without prior knowledge.   We talk about it as a group and let the late ones know how frustrating it is for the people who are there.  I would sit the group down and talk about their dedication and if they think the time should move so people can get there and be ready prior to the start time.  When the group has some input then they feel more responsible for being there when they said they would.  If the late person is one person I would pull that person aside and find out what is going on:  whether they are going through some personal stuff and can’t deal with the commitment or if they need to move to sub status for a time agreed on by both of you.
This year I’ve been more prone to have a sub or two come to replace the kids that don’t show on time.  I also do this funky drawing for people that are on-time.  I started that when my highest level choir moved to 7:00 am in the morning.  Every once in awhile there is something really cool they can pick and sometimes there is no drawing at all.  Within a month kids where running to the room still putting on shoes to get there for the on-time drawing.
So you were asking for emails:  here’s a shout out from a music teacher in California who is one of your subscribers.  I’m lucky enough to split my six 7th and 8th grade classes into bell groups for 50% of their music time.

Hey Dean-  most of the time…I’m there early…….
     1. If you only have one group rehearsing, those who are late – must stay to polish & put away equipment.
    2. Last one to rehearsal – has to bring treats to next rehearsal….
     just a couple of suggestions

    Danny Lion’s Email

      Hi Dean and Paul,
I listened to the 3rd podcast while riding in the car with NOTHING else to do…   Actually, it was fun, and I’d like to hear the earlier ones but can’t find a link to get them into iTunes.  Help me out.
         Have fun with the show.
I would be interested in doing an interview for future shows.  I’m a solo ringer, and I’m taking my bells to Europe next week for a solo tour to Serbia and Paris.  I just this morning figured out how to suck the air out of my foam so I can fit it into luggage.  Let’s hope it doesn’t explode inside the airplane.

    Ron Bellamy’s Email about Koosh

I feel bad for Paul losing his koosh balls….
Spent a little time looking for them (very little, actually), but seems there is a company in Australia that sells mondo koosh balls (4/5″ diameter) on Ebay.  The price seems reasonable to me – it’s the shipping that might make it unreasonable.  But, just for Paul’s information…..
    http://cgi.ebay.com/KOOSH-BALLS-set-of-3-mondo-size_W0QQitemZ7009390760QQcategoryZ11439QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
This is address for a set of three, which runs about $40 including shipping.
Perhaps the handbell podcasters can pitch in….
