Handbell/Music Education Moment -Tempos
BPM (beats per minute) are the most common indicators of tempo. For example, if desired tempo results in 72 quarter notes per minute the tempo would be 72 or M.M. 72. The M.M. stands for Maelzel’s Metronome, after Johann Maelzel who was awarded a patent in 1816 for a portable metronome.
The most common tempo markings in Italian are:
- Grave – very slowly and almost solemn
- Largo – slowly and broadly 40-60 BPM
- Adagio – slowly 66-76 BPM
- Lento – “slow” but usually only moderately so
- Andante – at a walking pace 76-108 BPM
- Moderato – at a moderate tempo, neither fast nor slow 106-120 BPM
- Allegretto – “a little allegro”, understood to be not quite as fast as allegro
- Allegro – quickly 120-168 BPM
- Vivace – very fast, lively and brisk
- Presto – fast 168-208 BPM
- Prestissimo – very, very fast.
Common Qualifiers
- con brio [Italian : con, with + brio, vigor.]
- non troppo – not too much; e.g. Allegro non troppo (or Allegro ma non troppo) means “Fast, but not too much.”
- molto – very, as in Allegro molto
- poco – slightly, as in Poco Adagio
- piu – more, as in Piu Allegro
- meno – less, as in Meno Presto
- Mosso – motion or movement
